Bhangra and some more..

Waited all week to watch V perform Bhangra for his school annual day.

I had an adrenaline rush watching my baby, look all grown up and dance perfectly to tune, do somersaults and use the lathi and sing along too.

I thought i would burst into tears when his turban came off and he stopped, a sob escaping his lips. He looked so lost....

My heart was bursting with love when he quietly walked to the side of the stage, handed over the turban to his teacher, and continued dancing from where he left off.

Silly me..i had tears in my eyes and could not get the video right!

***************************************************************************
V's best friend sitting right behind me kept reminding me that i am watching ' his best friend's dance", and kept clapping.

Yes Kiddo...that my " bestest friend " too, and thank god for friends like you.

***************************************************************************
Watching so many kids perform, on stage and off stage too...is such a balming effect.

The fact that 80% were too stunned to dance when put in front of the light is just ignorable statistics. Watching them up there, dressed and dolled up was reason enought to spend those few hours.

**************************************************************************
On a different note, i would have enjoyed swatting the following people....

- who walked in a full hour late, and walked in and out of the aisles, searching for non existent empty seats.
- who came dressed for a P3 party, and almost tripped on the dark aisle steps( i giggled, does that make me mean?)
- Who walked out of the auditorium to take calls, every five minutes, disturbing 300 others.
- THAT dad, who kept saying " Come on R", every five mins, before the kid on stage decided to call it a day and stop dancing altogether. Well done kiddo, is all i have to say!
- Parents who troop out as soon as their childs dance is over. Next year around, i am petitioning to put their kids dance the last item- about time they get a taste of their own medicine.

What love does...

Last night....

TB was coming in late. So we killed time by reading Dr Seuss's Books, drew on dotted lines, coloured parrots , and sketched about a tonne fish.

With my calf muscles killing me, i told V i want to lie down, can we please go sleep? He agreed, so we read the bubbles book in bed and settled. The pain was not going away and it must have shown on my face.

V quite did not like the look of it. He said" smile amma", i managed a weak one. Ten minutes later, he said" amma, i am hungry".

I almost fell out of my bed! my son, the food hater, is hungry!!!???I told him to stop joking and go to sleep. He said " No, i want idli"
We had mini idlis and sambhar for dinner and i had kept some for TB. I checked again, he said yes. I threatened him with dire consequences if i wake up and give him some and he does not eat all.

He still wanted idly. I gave up, went to the kitchen and got him idly..he wanted six of them, with jam. And his glass of water.

He took his plate, went to the dining table, got his cushion and sat down. I was ready to faint..he.is.sitting. at. dining. table, without a fight.

I read my book on the next chair, glancing sideways to catch him unwillingly stuff his mouth with the food , wondering what on earth??Why was he eating without wanting it??He finished all six idlis, had the water and tapped on my hand. I looked up, and he said.....

"Amma, now smile. I sat on the dining table, ate all my food, did not play with my car in between. I am good boy. You always smile when i finish all my food"

I think i cried. What did i do to deserve him?

V: " Amma you're my friend , na?"
Me: " Of course yes Kanna, why ?"
V: " I want that" *Pointing to jar of strawberry jelly drops kept high away from him*

Testing my fundamental understandings

We are watching "Jungle Book", maybe for the 5th time. I am answering a trizillion questions in between each scene, now that he is old enough to have doubts.

We reach the part where Mowgli is talking to the vultures..

V: " mama, what is this bird?"
Me: "It's a vulture?. Remember, we saw on TV the other day, after the lions ate the deer, these birds came and ate the rest? They eat dead animals "* feels blissfully happy about imparting this bit of national geographic info to child*
V:" Hmmm...* nods*

After like two minutes,

V: " Amma, i am also vulture"
Me: "Heh!,why?"
V: " I also eat dead animals, na? I eat dead fish & dead chicken. So i am also vulture"
Me: "Ummmm...ehhh...no"* strangely feels he is right, shuts up *

Sick preschooler at home

After 2.30 AM 'emptying contents of stomach' on parents brand new blanket, and falling asleep, I let the poor child sleep through morning and not send him to school.

Let the poor child rest at home and recuperate...

Ok...you get the background. We leave for our respective offices and this is the next scene.

9. 20 AM: call up home to check on poor sick child. Poor child is awake and has demanded noodles/'Lightning McQueen' cake/ Chicken for breakfast. Demanded that mom call dad and ask why he left without bye!

11.40 AM: Usual time for V to reach home from school, so i call by habit. V picks up phone- i ask him if he is feeeling better? He ignores question, and proceeds to ask me why i was calling again. So i speak to valiamma and keep the phone down.

11.45 AM: V calls back asking why i did not speak to him!!!!!!So i listen to the entire rentition of "Finley the fire engine" and ask him if i could keep the phone down . He says bye, gives me a flying kiss

12.15 PM: V calls again. Asks"When you come home, will you read me this book?". I am holding another call, i politely put that on hold and ask" which book, kanna?".
V: "This book mama.." picture V furiously waving the book in front of mouthpiece*

Me: " I can't see over the phone, tell me which story?"
V: * long pause*. I go back to other call and tell them i will call back
"hmmmmm...the....water, pond...one minit....
ah..the duckling going to mama duck story"

Me:" The ugly duckling?...sure, when i come in the evening, we will read it. ok?Amma is going to keep the phone. Bye"
V: " Ok, bye"

1.30 PM: I call to check if he has has lunch, cough has got better, has slept et cetera...
Valiamma picks up and says she is going back to native village( She says this at least 5 times everyday, just so you guys don't panic yet). Apparently he did not want to have lunch and she forced it down his throat, so he told her" You not my friend, you go home"..and they were not talking to each other.

I demand to speak to him, he refuses to come to the phone, wants the phone to be taken to him.
Finally, he comes on line" kannu, how are you feeling?"
V: " Fine....will you get me a white car like buntu's when you come?"

Me: " No, i just got you a plane yesterday. Did you have lunch?"
* ingores second part of question*" Why are you in office, you come home"

Me: " I will be there soon...you go sleep for while, only then can you go down and play. ok?"
* No response*...i can hear him making "vroooom" sounds

Me: " Ok..go sleep NOW. And don't trouble valiamma"
V: " Bye"

2.30 PM: V calls
V: "Amma, when you come, will you get me a gingerbread man?"
Me: "Why are you still awake?. Plus i really don't know where to get a gingerbread man from. Go to sleep. "

V:" You ask the autorickshaw uncle to take you to gingerbread shop, and get gingerbread man from there, ok?"
Me: Ok. I will try. IF i get it, i will bring it in the evening. Go to sleep

4.30 PM: Call home, no response...means they are at the park.

6.30 pM: Call home, no response...still playing at park

7.30 PM: Call home* rings endlessly*, Valiamma picks up at last.
Me:" You just got back from park, so long?"
Valiamma:*exasperated* "You should maybe send him to school, even if he is sick. Now i am exhausted.

We read 'ugly duckling', 'the noddy story' and played with jigsaw puzzles after all that.
Now, i need a leave! So much for sympathy!!

2nd February, 2005

2.30 AM

I am half conscious, i can't feel anything, and my back is still killing me...my eyes are bloated from crying so long. The nurses are surprised i have not screamed at all though this...

Suddenly they move from the side, between the tears i see a blurred vision. In red saree, wearing gold ornaments, she looks like mahalakshmi from that old calendar. This must be goddess..That vision is stored forever in my memory.
Goddess tells me she had to come and see me, however far she was away and tells me things are not looking too good. She wants to cut open and take the baby out....whatever, i tell her. I can feel the scalpel cutting through, strangely there is no pain.

3.03 AM

She asks me to push, and then there is a huge wave of relief. I know the baby is out. Aren't they supposed to cry. I can't hear anything..i panic. I hear the water turned on , and a loud wail.. the sweetest sound ever heard.

The nurse comes around with baby" it's a boy" she says. I see a glimpse of the red face , and a stubby nose. I reach and kiss the nose. She says she has to take him to the NICU, he is going to be in the incubator for a while....and he is taken away

3.10 AM

The doctor congratulates me, and says she needs to stitch me up. I am is a trance, i ask her if it is going to hurt..she laughs and says" not more than what you went through"..i smile.
They stitch me up, and i listen all about the wedding she was at, in a haze. She tells me she is done, after 23 stitches, and asks me to rest...I want chai, they get me chai, and i fall asleep on the gynec table. They let me sleep.

6.30 AM
I wake up, and feel like i was in a dream. The stitches hurt, and the entire night comes back in a moment.
I am shifted to a room. I want to see my baby, i tell them. He is in Neo natal ICU, you can see him at 11.30 AM they say. I count seconds.

My dad comes, and hugs me like there is no tomorrow. Family comes into the room. They have seen baby in the morning...he is very tall, like TB, they tell me. I count seconds

11.30 AM

I have been waiting outside for 15 minutes now. They let me into the visitors room, the nurse comes and takes me inside the ICU. It is yellow all over the place. So many babies. can't amke out which one is ours....The nurse stops right next to an incubator.

V lies there...too tall for the incubator, and lanky..but he looks like the perfect baby that was ever made. I can't hold him. i can only touch his feel and hands. I think i will die..i want to stay there.

The nurse walks me out. I see him the next day.

*****************************************************************************

V spends 15 days in NICU before he goes home with us. TB saw V for the first time after 3 days after he was born. V battled losing weight & not being able to feed for a full month before he finally got back his act and decided it was time to fight back. He has not stopped...

Happy birthday my son. You have been and will be my best ever gift.

Today you will turn 4. I think i will never ever be able to show you how much i love you. I just don't know how.

1st February, 2005

7.00 AM
Why do i always wake up on time, when i have nothing much to do but sleep in? Makes for a good case study?

8.30 AM
Adai and Coconut chutney should be higher up on the food pedestral. Especially when it is lovingly made by amma and served directly onto the plate. Damn tummy does not allow more than two at a time.

I am so having a second helping in another two hours.

10.30 AM
Second day of holidays and i am slightly bored?have i turned into a workaholic. I picked up all the old magazines and clean up the living room, like always.

11. 00 AM
Missing my mom! for the first time in maybe 12 years?, i call her up to say i miss her and want to see her.

They were to come down on my star birthday 4 days later anyway...Mom was very apologetic saying they cannot come earlier. Should not have called her,. now she is going to feel bad the whole day. Stupid me!

11.30 AM
" Avial arrives"

11.45 AM
Go to kitchen and get a plate with adai and avial, for the second round.Finish , dump plate in sink and plan to settle down.

12.00 PM
Mom is off to take a bath. Youngest aunt comes over to give me company and watch over while she is off.

12.05 PM
Get up to take a magazine , see a small puddle forming on the floor....oh god, incontinence? at this age. Too embarassing, call out to aunt!

Puddle becomes a gush, and it is water, or something like that..it does not stop. Don't know what to do...

Aunt knocks on bathroom door, mom comes out, i go in and wait for this thing to stop. It does not...mom panicks, calls elder aunt. She comes over.

Gush becomes trickle, i can now walk...aunt says lets go to the doctor now, but i want to change, i will not go to doctor in this dress. My room is upstairs..younger aunt comes along to help.

12.20 PM
Come down to find amma and valiamma all ready to leave. Amma is calling achan who has just left to buy something. his phone is ringing, he does not pick up. I tell amma " He has not atken the phone, it is ringing inside his cupboard"

Amma and valiamma, step out to get a taxi, achan walks in. They kill him with their looks. He quietly takes car key and they get me in the car.

12.35 PM
Walk into hospital where i was to meet the doctor on 5th. The doctor is on leave today, go to the labour room, they tell us.

12.40 PM
Walk into the labour room, this place must be hell! At least it sounds like. There are at least 5 women in various stages of labour screaming bloody murder. Wish the doctor would examine me quickly so i can go home and be at peace. Looks like i am going to spend the rest of my holidays in bed...not nice

12.50 PM
Doctor has heard all amma and aunts have to say, she asks me to undress, and wear the hospital gown. I lie down, my tummy is not round anymore, and i can see the baby's outline . God, this is scary.

The doctor checks all my vitals, and wants to check baby's heartbeat. They connect something to my tummy and ask me to count the number of times baby kicks..i can't. I keep losing track. I tell her i can't. She gets a nurse to check.

Why can't she finish with me..i want to go home.

She calls amma and tells her they will have to induce labour. I have lost all fluid, there is no way i can have c-sec, so they have to give medicines and saline.

I don't tink i am ready for this yet..why now? Will the baby be ready to come out. I demand to see the doctor and ask her about the chances of baby , if the labour goes through. She asks me to pray. This cannot be happening...not to us.

1.30 PM- 5.00 PM
4 saline bottles and no sign of anyting yet. I just saw two women come in, deliver and go...there is another girl in the next bed, who has come in with a false alarm. She is asked to go back.

I too want to go home..i am not ready to have this baby yet.

5.30 PM
See amma and aunt. They have been sitting right outside, she tells me my mom and dad are on their way.

8.00 PM
Everyone except me ahve gone out of the labour room..it is just me and two nurses from the night shift...the old back pain creeps up. I call for the nurse. She rubs my back.

9.00 PM
My mom comes inside...i want to cry. She is crying. I want to see dad, but he is not allowed inside. The pain comes in shocks now.........I want TB here, now.

10.00 PM
The pain is unbearable.I am shifted to the gynec's table. The nurses are rubbing my back. I ask them what is happening , they say i ahve not dilated enough..they are waiting.

11.00 PM
I have stopped dilating...the pain is so bad, i have stopped feeling my body from waist down..it is just numb. I am crying, because my back is killing me..i think these nurses are angels, they have been rubbing my back for the last three hours. They tell me they have called teh doctor, but she is at a family function far away. So some other doctor is coming to have a look. Anything..

I lose track of time....

31st January, 2005

Ahh..first day all at home.

Woke up late, was visited by aunts, uncles and cousins. Unpacked the bags and put all my stuff on the shelves. Tickled the doggy's tummy with leg and generally did nothing.

No no..not really. ...

-Made sure i gave the list to each aunt as to what i want made by them.Craving or no craving, this was the opportunity to make the most of it. Tomorrow, valiamma is making my all time favourite "avial".

-Called up and booked time with the doctor for Feb 5th. Wonder what she will have to say. Hopefully whe will be able to give a date i can wait for....and then tell TB to be here in advance.
Not sure they will let him inside the room though. At least he can sit right outside and panic.

Everyone except mom and me went for the after wedding party and came back with more goodies for me:-)

30th January, 2005

Family weddings are never to be missed. The rustle of kancheevaram silks, the smell of incense and crushed jasmine flowers and the sheer pleasure of catching up with relatives makes every wedding fun.

And of course, the sadya. Hmm..i must have gorged on the avial and payasam. And caught up of some sleep tooo...having the wedding at a house has its advantages.
Me and valiamma, exchanged all the gossip with the bride, as we rested after a heavy lunch.....

When all the guests has left, and the bride and groom had settled for the day, we went home. And to think that i would have missed all this by staying back...aaaghhh!

Now, officially i can start my leave/ holiday/ rest..whatever. I hereby resolve to be lazy for the next month, and do nothing.

Looking forward to having amma and achan come over this weekend , and missing TB:-(

29th January, 2005

Home, with loved one's. Missing TB. Never been home without him in the last 4 years....called him and mom and dad. They are coming down on my birthday to see me and the " tummy" they had not seen:-)

Everyone planning to leave for the party before R Aunty's wedding tomorrow. Decided to go today and see her since tomorrow would be very hectic. So off to their house and party....

Came back late in the day after lots of family gossip, hogging on party food, all the while being treated like a princess. Even managed to get everyone to agree to bring me for the wedding next day. It was at their home anyway..and i could always get some rest if i wanted. All of them decided to indulge the pregnant girl and let her have some fun...

Hmm....being pregnant feels nice.

Tomorrow.......off to the wedding

28th January, 2005

Was my last working day before i went on maternity leave.

Achachan and Achamma had come down to take me to your dad's place. You weren't due for another month and half and i wanted to spend time with both sides of family before you came into our lives. We were to go to your dad's place and stay for two weeks, and all of them wanted to come and drop me at your ammamma's house on Feb 15th. I would spend the next month with them, waiting for you to arrive, soaking up the affection of loved one's, being indulged.

The past few months had been a whirlwind of activities and bought along with it some very unwanted events in our life, and work had been killing. I so needed that break.

Since your dad was far away, mama met up with you achachan and achamma at the hotel they had stayed. The dear friends mama had been staying with insisted on having me dropped, but it was a workday and i would not have them take time off. So off i went in a cab, with my bags in tow.

Achachan and Achamma were so happy to see us. We left and went to the station from where we were to take a train.

By some strange hand of fate, we were booked in a train that none of us had ever travelled in, and it started from a very obscure station. Achachan spent quite some time locating the platform and then figured out that it was going to take a while for the train to arrive , and that there was no place to sit down in the platform.

When the train finally arrived, we could not figure out which was our coach. So achachan left the very pregnant me and the poor soul achamma who could otherwise not walk very comfortably seated and went in search of the right coach. By the time it was figured out and we were settled, achachan was exhausted.

We sat and talked and talked and i told achamma what all i wanted to eat, what all i wanted to do when i was there, and settled for the night.

I closed my eyes, shifted in discomfort in the berth, and dreamt about the days i would do nothing but anticipate your arrival.

Growing up to be an elder brother.

No....we are not having another kid. At least not that i know of.

But V certainly seems to be growing to like being an elder brother, from what we have been seeing. For the last one week we had his cousin, TB's brothers daughter at home.

She is about two and half years old, is constantly talking and singing, and is a complete character on her own. I had my own apprehensions about how V will react when she is here. Of course, they talk to each other on the phone every week and proclaim love, send kisses and all that stuff, but having her actually play with his toys is a totally different matter altogether.

So they came, and V started out by being the indulgent brother and handed over the cars and the assortment of vehicles he had, and promply hid his new favourite car. She ignored all of that and went for his older soft toys, that had been stowed away to be given off.
Suddenly, all those toys he had not even glanced at in the last two years, became favourites!

Well..., it got better over the days, eventhough we had instances of V telling her " you are not my sister, give my toy back" and she refusing to acknowledge V's" you are my sister na, please give me that toy" about 50 times in a day.

We also had instances of " this is my mom, not your aunt", " this is my uncle, not your dad" through the days.

But overall, it was not as bad as i expected. Both of them, despite being on loggerheads seem to have figured out that their love is here to stay, and these are just temporary issues.
It was worth watching D crawl into the bed with V and try and wake him up. Even better to see two bright and eager faces emerge from the bedroom holding hands, saying " goo mornim" to all and sundry , including the washing machine on the way.

By the time they left yesterday, they had settled well enough to play with each other for hours together, without any intervention from us. V for sure was not keen on letting her go, but he has extracted a surety from us that he goes home with TB's mom, who leaves in another two weeks.

I am so proud that V will make a fantastic elder brother. Like the one i always wanted , but never had. Now all we need is to make sure he has a younger sibling.

Now that, is a debatable issue. For now, he may have to make do with cousins.

A full house

I have a full house going on...7 adults and two kids below the age of 4 at home. And it has been great....

For a good part of the weekend, i was trying to put things away, make space, pull out sheets and pillows and covers for all of us.I freted and picked and packed and bought supplies and re arranged stuff till it drove me mad.

They arrived late evening, and promptly, all planning went out of the windows...there was stuff lying all around the house, unpacked bags, the kitchen counters full of stuff that had done the journey to find us.. the younger kid finding all the toys i had kept to give away, V staking claim to all of those toys he had not touched in a year , and general pandemonium.

I sat down and wondered what help was it to try and organize before chaos descended. Not much, it looked like.

But....i loved the pandemonium. It felt home. We spent half an hour before sleeptime fighting over " who will sleep where?". We finally ended up having the parents sleep in the spare bedroom, the men in front of the TV, and both the girls caught up on life whispering over sleeping kids.

The week promises to be fun:-)

Today

Plucked a 4 year old from bed and shoved him under the shower in the wintery morning, despite the bawl.

4 year old was fresher and better behaved than usual.

Verdict: Should do again.

Of F's and B's

When my 4 year old wakes up in the morning crying, and telling his dad " B for Baba has got stuck in between.."
What is supposed to be done?

And when i tell him it is only a dream and " we will pull B out from there", he looks at us with gave concern and continues " F is also stuck with B!"

Should i be worried? Is he having an overdose of alphabet learning?

For those who thought the header meant something else, please get your minds disinfected. We don't say such things, at least not loudly, not in front of V.

PS: TB will disagree, he's caught me saying some choice words with V around. Thankfully V has not learnt any YET!

Saturday , Sunday & Monday

Saturday

is the day V and me with his friend and mom watched Madagascar 2. BIG cinemas ran out of caramel popcorn for the day after that. After-effects of movie include a hidesign bag still holding remnants of caramel popcorn and a big dent in bank balance. Snack counters should be banned in movie theatres. Period.

Sunday

is the day V got himself a 101 Dalmations bedcover set. He also lovingly offered me the cheeseless garlic bread from Pizza Hut after eating off the cheese in one large bite.He also managed to get his butt frozen staying in the swimming pool with TB.I had to towel his butt his back into shape!

Monday

is the day Santa bought gift for V from Crosswords. Santa aka Mom aka Me, bought the red car with remote in anaticipation of wrangling out best behaviour for the next three days. Now plotting action plan to get the best out of " Santa will bring your gift if....."* wicked smile*

Off i go....on a broom

The D with legs

So, we have been practising our alphabets for a while. About two months, or something close to that..

After the last parents meeting, after which we( i) resolved to be a complete hands on mom on education, we have made miles of progress. Reading out alphabets where ever he feels fancy is one...asking me for the word is another favourite exercise.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
V reading out random alphabets from anywhere....

V: Mama what is " f.u.n"
Me: That is " fun", as in "masti"

V: "s.a.m.s.u.n.g"...whats that?
Me: Oh..that is " samsung"- it is the name of our fridge.
V: What is the name of the fridge at ammamma's place?
Me: * racks brains- hollow sound*" Hmmm..i think we'll ask her when we call next?"

V: * reading paper over my shoulder* "a.t.t.a.c.k"
Me: "Aahhh...here's your Noddy book. Which story you want me to read?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------
We also write and draw...

That's A, B, H , E and D- which V decided looks better with legs and eyes and ultimately turned into a "bug"

And that is Papa, Mama, himself , and jellyfish( please don't ask why the jellyfish)

I love the picture....see how slender mama is looking , exactly like in real life...
No? errr..okay.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tomorrow is next parents meeting...updates after that.

Nursery admission saga

First the news….

V has got admission into Junior KG!!! By Mumbai standards, it is bigger than making it into a professional college, or so I was told.

For what it is worth, Mumbai just does not have enough schools, and not just reputed schools, just any school. I could say that again and again. I meet people who refuse to move to Mumbai, because getting admissions is Mumbai is a pain in the a**. I had colleagues who were still fighting for an admission in February last year and had resigned myself to the same fate, mentally. It has been a year of angst.

Thankfully we stay in that part of Mumbai which has more schools that the rest of the city. I have been calling up schools, picking up forms, filling them out like we are applying for a PG abroad, and wondering why am I doing so much for the admission of a 4 year old????????

TB and I have studied state board till tenth, and personally I think both of us have done decently in life. It was a little difficult to absorb the obsession about school/ brand / status etc. I still don’t get it. Schools here prefer children with non working mothers, so that they have a family support system. So what is my education worth? Peanuts? I could be a post PhD and a doctor, but………….
“Sorry maam, the school policy prefers to have one stay in parent”. That was the exact line said to my senior colleague, who is a Harvard Business school alumnus, by a “reputed” south Mumbai school. The next time around, she was wiser, she got through, by “lying through my teeth, because that is what they wanted to hear”.

I did not want to lie; I did not want to play down my status and achievements in life. Neither did I want to compromise on his education. The biggest gift that our parents have given us was our education, and we want V to have the best, always. This school was one among the two that I secretly hoped V should get into. It was closest to our house, and the bus comes into our complex, and the review is quite good. And above all, it has a mix of kids from all walks of life. I firmly believe that what we learn in early years form our personality and social foundation, and i definitely do not want him to feel like a very " priviledged" child. He should be able to distunguish between his 'needs' and 'wants'....and i wanted a school where he will learn to appreciate what he has in life and not take it for granted.

Before we walked in, TB said” I am nervous”, and I replied “So am I, but let’s just go and be ourselves. And leave the rest to almighty”. Thankfully, this interview was much better that I expected. Of course they asked everything about me and TB except our horoscopes (which even we have no clue about), and both of us were equivocal.

TB was asked what he had heard about the school and why we chose to apply there. I could almost hear him say “because my wife says this is a decent school and because you called us for the interview”. But the man rose to the occasion and fed them some bull shit about how he has heard from some of our neighbors’, who send their children here about all the good feedback some crap like that. I can vouch for the fact that he does not even know one of those “so called neighbors” he has quoted. But anyhow, they seemed to have bought the story.

The star of the day, however, was the boy himself, who has been showing all the signs of a stand off minutes before we entered the interview room.

He sat where he was asked to, answered all the questions, shied away from singing a rhyme and looked down (!). The clincher was when the principal (I am assuming so) asking him

P: " Why do you want to come to this school?" (Tell me, how does a 4 year old boy respond to that question. I can’t imagine!!!!I was quite sure he would say something in lines of I don’t want to come here)
But surprise, he says” This is a big school”. So what does “princi the porcupine” do? Stop there? No. she goes on….

P: Which school do you study now?
V: “xyz” (current school name)

P: Is that not a big school? Why you want to come here? (I could have strangled her; she was asking all this to a 4 year old!!!)
V: “No, that is a small school, this is a biiiiiig school”*complete with actions*

Then P the Porcupine called him around and gave him a chocolate. He took that, and asked for more, for” papa and mama”. They laughed as they told us that he was admitted! Considering they told most of parents to come back and check the list for admission later on, I re checked again, to make sure I had heard properly. We had made it…..yippee

Phew! That was close. I had thought we had lost out on the rhyme part. It could not have been so simple? We walked out grinning like fools, and very very relieved. We still have to fork out a huge amount as fees, but for now, we have a seat to send him to next June, and better still, at a place we wanted.

Right now, I am feeling like V has made it to Harvard, or Leeds or Princeton…trust me, the paperwork is as much, and so is the relief.
